The ALRS 50th Anniversary Celebration

It was a clear and sunny day when the 50th Anniversary of the PhD program in Arid Lands Resource Sciences celebrated its October 26, 2018 at the beautiful ENR 2 building.  The anniversary offered an opportunity to reflect on the milestones of the program and to share the achievements of its students.  And since its inception the ALRS program has graduated 90 students.   

The event kicked-off with 2 Student’ Poster Contests:

  1. Master students in environmental sciences poster contest- this contest was conceive to promote the ALRS PhD program to masters’ students at the University of Arizona.  And the winners are:
  1. First Place - Bailey Bellevance,  MS student from the Geographic Information Systems Technology
  2. Second Place - Kelli Michelle Williams, MS student in Development Practice
  3. Third Place - Monica Landgrave-Serrano – MS student in Planning

  2  ALRS Students’ Poster Contest – its purpose is to display the varied research that current students are undertaking. The top 2 winners of this contest also represented the ALRS program in the 2018 GIDP Annual Student Research Showcase.  And the winners are:

  1. First Place - Ivan Gaxiola Camacho
  2. Second Place – Elia Tapia
  3. Third Place  - Drew Elliot Eppehimer

After lunch for the event attendees a symposium comprising of recent ALRS graduates was held at the Agnes Haury Hall.  To read about the symposium speakers, please click here .  Videos of past alumni who were unable to attend this event were also shown at the symposium.

The festivities continued with a Mexican dinner at the estate of Fernando Zepeda, where the students and faculty also were treated to a demonstration of the different Apple Cider from Stoic Cider.  Stoic Cider is the company that was co-founded by alumnus- Kanin Routson.
