Congratulations to Joona Mikkola, our incoming Fall 2022 ALRS student! Joona has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious UA Fellowship under the University Fellows Program for the 2022-2023 academic year. Another ALRS student, Rebecca Renteria, was a UA Fellow the previous academic year, for 2021-2022.

Hailing from Finland, Joona is a climate tech startup founder (SoilWatch) and land-degradation researcher with several years of experience in managing, advising and monitoring agriculture, natural resources, and food security projects in the development context. He is passionate about ecological economics, and he believes that the only path towards a more equitable and sustainable world is by having nature's value signaled in the economy.

The world's challenges require interdisciplinary solutions from the top minds. The University Fellows Program prepares the University of Arizona's most distinguished graduate students to be the innovative leaders the world needs. This program is the flagship initiative of the Graduate Center. It includes a fellowship offered to the University's highest-ranked incoming doctoral and masters students. Recipients of the fellowship receive a competitive financial package, professional development programming, mentoring and community engagement opportunities, and a richly interdisciplinary cohort. The goals of the University Fellows Program are to recruit the best students to the University of Arizona; develop interdisciplinary scholars, artists, and practitioners who are the next generation of leaders; and promote collaborative innovation on campus and throughout our broader communities.
